Bauer Pottery Open House + Sale

bauer pottery started in the 1880's making hand crafted gardenware. the studio was located in LA until it ended production in the 1960s. the pottery company reopened it's doors as bauer in atwater village in 2000. Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is pleased to announce Adjacent Possibilities, the first solo exhibition by Deborah Zlotsky.

In Deborah Zlotsky's new series, Adjacent Possibilities, the artist borrows from the scientific term which refers to the way organisms and systems seek alternative states of being by shifting slightly from a designated path. When this happens, more complex relationships emerge. Zlotsky's new paintings mark a significant departure from her previous work. For the past four years, Zlotsky has restricted herself to black & white drawings. Although the work was also based on abstract forms, it was much more organic and sinewy. The new paintings are strongly focused on form and color. The forms are neither geometric nor organic but a strange combination of the two, and the mature and handsome color palette adds a gravity and seriousness to the work. Within each painting, abstract forms not only appear to be figuring themselves out, but competing for space of the canvas. The bold blocks of color collide and push into one another, generating more complex relationships and inevitably push the canvas to appear ever evolving. Zlotsky says of her work, "abrading, repainting and re-varnishing lead to unexpected relationships, and I work in response to the changes that accumulate. Accidents repeatedly redirect me, blurring my understanding of the difference between accident and intention."

Deborah Zlotsky currently resides in upstate New York where she is a professor at St. Rose College. She received her B.A. in art history from Yale University, and her M.F.A. from the University of Connecticut. She exhibits extensively along the East Coast.

i found these great pictures on fb taken by Eric Diebold. Eric is a friend of a friend of mine in KC and a budding photographer. I love food trucks, especially the small vintage ones. I also LOVE mexican food and snow cones. they are a couple of best things in life in my opinion! Who's with me??!! I love how these little food slingers promote community and togetherness by merely making you stand in line to order food. Eating while standing and chatting with others all just wanting a quick lunch or snack! yummy! xo amanda

I am so excited for the opening of "living in a modern way" coming this october at LACMA. i have always been very drawn to the modern esthetic and the forward thinking of the mid-century modern movement. i am lucky to live in a place where it is celebrated and where many examples are provided for viewing. i love socal! xo amanda

"Living in a Modern Way," an exhibition opening Oct. 1 at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, includes a re-creation of the scene in a 1951 Los Angeles Times Home Magazine cover, above. The headline to the cover package: What Makes the California Look.Sixty years later, we're adding a question mark: What Makes the California Look? The 1951 vignette included a yellow Eames armchair from 1948, a Van Keppel Green cord lounge chair, a pot and stand by John Follis and Rex Goode, and a brazier with skewers -- fire pit and barbecue, all in one -- by Stanley Hawk. Hi everyone, Keri here again! So, as summer winds down, I've been thinking of little trips I could take before school starts up again. On my list is a day visit to Santa Barbara...here's what I'd like to see and do (the short list) if I go to there!

Ganna Walska Lotusland: this is a gorgeous garden fairyland created by Madame Ganna Walska. It is located on a huge estate and has gardens with different themes. Tours are available by reservation.

The Hungry Cat, Santa Barbara Edition: mmmm...I'm getting hungry just thinking about it! With outposts in Hollywood, Santa Monica and Santa Barbara, the Hungry Cat has delicious food (with a focus on wonderful seafood options) and inventive cocktails (blackberry sage margarita anyone?).

Rose Story Farm: This farm grows some of the most gorgeous roses, in just about every color imaginable, and they offer tours. The property also has little cottages where you can stay!

The Canary Hotel: Michael S. Smith did the interior design, and his take on Santa Barbara style is just beautiful. Have a look around, enjoy something on the rooftop, or sit down for dinner at the Coast Restaurant and Bar.

Wine Tasting: Santa Barbara has its own wine country, and it would be great to explore its Southern California varietals. Like your very own Sideways!

Hello...Domicile intern Keri here! While Amanda is busy stealing green tiles from Yamashiro, I thought I would take a bit of time to talk about art opportunities that have happened or are happening in the OC and LA (or a little farther afield).

First, the ones that have already come and gone, but are still worth mentioning because they were so incredible:

Alexander McQueen's "Savage Beauty" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. I desperately wanted to see this one but just couldn't swing it. Fortunately, the catalog is still available here.

"Art in the Streets" at MOCA's Geffen Contemporary just shut down last week. I saw this one and it was incredible. I bought the catalog here.

At the Orange County Museum of Art, the Alexander Calder Exhibit "Alexander Calder and Contemporary Art: Form, Balance, Joy" continues until September 4, 2011. I always find Calder's work so whimsical and intriguing and plan to visit very, very soon.

Isamu Noguchi can be seen at the Laguna Art Museum exhibit "Noguchi: California Legacy" through October 2, 2011. I have yet to go, although I did enjoy seeing Noguchi's sculpture garden near South Coast Plaza, right here.

Most of us are vaguely familiar with Tim Burton or his work. To learn more about this incredibly unique man (or, as some have said, creative genius), a visit to LACMA's Tim Burton exhibit (running through October 31, 2011) might be in order.

And a few more random, catch them if you can's:

(1) The Bodies exhibition, currently on view at the Luxor in Las Vegas: from what I've heard, this one is pretty incredible!

(2) The Miller House and Garden in Columbus, Indiana. Built by Eero Saarinen and recognized as a National Historic Landmark, this amazing residence was just recently opened to the public. It has been well preserved and provides a view into some incredible modernist design.

(3) "Who Gets to Call it Art?" a look at the 60's art world and Henry Geldzahler, the first "contemporary art" curator for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I saw this documentary ages ago and really enjoyed it - perhaps another viewing is in order!

yamashiro yama yummy

i recently was invited to a birthday party for a friend at the legendary yamashiro's in hollywood. i had heard of this historic restaurant and was so excited to have been invited to attend. it was such a treat!

it has a rich history that you can read about on the website!

i have a thing for vintage postcards. i guess because they are hand drawn and the colors are always so vintage-y. greens, blues, browns and tans. i don't collect them i just admire!

we ate at a long table in lower left corner. Fun was so neat, nice warm night open air. note the awesome green tile. more on that later.

an AMAZING view of hollywood! die!! and that pagoda is apparently a million years old and has been there forever. i really like things that have been there forever! is it called nostalgia, yep that's it. i have a bad case of nostalgia.

awesome green tile...I'm obsessed with emerald green. i am going to just say it's pretty much my favorite color! i would love to break into yamashiro's and GENTLY jack hammer all those tiles out and hoard them! xo amanda

this past july i took a trip to austin, tx for my nephew's 3rd birthday. the trip was filled with family, friends old and new and a lot of really great design. congrats austin tx on harboring some really great design destinations!!! i'm a fan!

my sis and i ate lunch at perla's with domicile's new friend kelly lapante of standard magazine. i am in love and have not stopped thinking about this simple design solution they used. they painted two of the table slats; one blue one white. super simple! right!? then paired the tables with striped directors chairs. so effective and fun!!!

they used to be yellow! cute too! but still love the pink and white.

Ok, so around the world might not happen, but we'll make it across the pond, I promise. Just not yet...

I didn't make my first trip to New York until a few years ago, and now I can't get enough. A few things I've liked:

Shopping:

Oh the shopping! Can't go to New York without a stop at Bergdorf Goodman and Barney's. Love John Derian's shops down in the East Village. Kate Spade and Kirna Zabete in Soho are fun. I don't think a visit would be complete without a stop at ABC Carpet and Home. And for a little flea action, I love the Antiques Garage.

Museums and Galleries:

I'm itching to see Alexander McQueen's Savage Beauty at the Met, and I really enjoyed a recent visit to the New Museum down in the East Village. I always love what I see at the Gagosian and Paul Kasmin Galleries. The Monya Rowe Gallery represents a favorite of mine, Larissa Bates. Another recent highlight was the Roses all along Park Avenue.

Something a little different:

It's always fun to go outside the box. Last November I had the great honor of saying hello to Albert Hadley at "Rooms with a View," at The Southport Congregational Church. In 2010, room vignettes were created by proteges of Mr. Hadley, in an homage to his work. Keep an eye out for the next one in the first week of November (I believe).

6 Columbus:

This is my go to in NYC. Right off of Central Park West, the location for me can't be beat, and the staff is great. Steven Sclaroff designed this one, and while the interior design isn't the reason I come back again and again, I do love Mr. Sclaroff's work (I L.O.V.E Kate Spade's apartment!). Warning: it's a little dark and moody, and like so many NYC hotels the rooms are tiny, so it may not be for everyone.

Hi everyone...I'm very excited to be here! So as Amanda and Jolene mentioned, I am their intern (or, as they affectionately call me, their bitch). I'm just finishing up my B.A. in interior design and looking forward to where this career takes me. Interior designers rely so much on inspiration, and for me, traveling is one of the best ways to stir the creative spark. With that in mind, I thought I'd try to take you around the world in 5 days, to show you a few things and places that have meant something to me (we'll see how far I get...it might just be around the country!). So, the Globetrotters are packed with all the essentials, not to mention a few wow pieces, and off we'll go!!

i'm happy to say there is a new interior design exhibit opening tomorrow at the amoa - austin museum of art. looking forward to checking it out sometime between now and september. after september, i believe i heard the amoa will be moving - location tbd?? anyhow, let's hope it's on my vanpool route.

also opening at the amoa - mona's mona's and more mona's. amanda and i both know someone who would dig this (....our dad, long time collector/creator of mona lisa representations).

one location i wish my vanpool would take me is laguna gloria - part of the amoa and not far from downtown austin. i love this museum because you can enjoy art and nature simultaneously. the beautiful italian inspired home was built in 1916 and occupied by Mrs. Clara Driscoll and her husband. it is surrounded by grand live oak trees and overlooks lake austin.

greetings! this is amanda's sister, gayla. i'm very exciting to be guest-blogging this week for domicile id. (thx amanda and jolene!) i live in the austin, tx area with my husband, son, and two dogs. i work in a very technical field, but i have gained a rich knowledge about all things aesthetic from my artist father, designer sister, and creative mother...so hopefully i won't bomb on this blog. ok - let's get to it!

recently i attended the austin renegade craft fair(!) i had been looking forward to this event for an entire year...since the last renegade rolled through town. they bring an incredible selection of exhibitors who make edgy crafty items. it's like the live version of etsy.com(!) here are a few of my fave's from this year.

jolene and I just arrived back in cali ummmm an hour ago from our our whirlwind tradhome NYC trip. we both had such a fantastic time! we spent yesterday with our fellow top 20 trads gallery hopping in chelsea, lunching at the park, also in chelsea, then partied it up at the gorgeous 1stdibs showroom at the nydc. lastly dinner and a tradhome celebration at grange. it was a quick trip for us! tomorrow we begin our next adventure early AM!! we'll keep ya posted!! for now here are the pics of my home from tradhomemag.com. xo amanda

from time to time i see bloggers plugging products. and most of those time i put those products in my notes under the heading, 'things to buy.' i find blogs the best way to get amazing user reviews from actual users (and ones i admire). i recently came across this su rf spray and it works like wonders. i mean i live by the beach, so it only makes sense that i would have 'beachy' hair. if you want that messy beach look, go get yourself some of this. light, smells good, and really works. perfect for the summer. jolene.

my last plug is going to be for this beauty. my iphone 4. to be honest, i'm not sure what i would do without this phone. i was a blackberry user before and really had my blinders on. every time someone convinced of making the switch, i felt that i had some type of stock in blackberry and would defend it to the end. now that i'm on the other side, the right side, i laugh at myself because it's not even a comparison. i could go on for days about this gem, so email me, but if you're teetering between any phone and the iphone. hands down, iphone every time. you'll thank me later.

happy monday. amanda and i had a crazy busy weekend getting ready for some fun surprises we have in store for you and yours. when we finally got back home from our long all-day journeys on sunday evening, we were amazed to see this:

No, they’re not a tribute to Angelyne. Cambodians fleeing the Khmer Rouge in the late 1970s arrived in large numbers in Southern California, where they were recruited by Win-chell’s. At the time the coated, greaseproof boxes that held the pastries were costly and came in white, the color of mourning in Cambodia. So the immigrants found a company, Evergreen in Cerritos, that made the boxes cheaper and uncoated in pink. They will soon be seen in the Midwest, says Len Bell, who was a Winchell’s division manager in the ’70s. One Cambodian shop owner, he says, recently moved to St. Louis with a trailer full of the boxes. But we’ll still be the capital of dough-nuts, annually consuming more than 750 million of them, mostly at independent enterprises.

btw national doughnut day is the first friday of june. I know!! really far away from now. just keep it mind. quick story! one time jolene and I went to the above location ON doughnut day to purchase a yummy doughnut. we chose this location based on their "tiny" signage. to our dismay we were actually surprised to find out that they actually server more coffee than doughnuts now. They keep the giganto doughnut because it's historic. so don't be fooled...their selection is slim to none in the "d" department.

we just received word that we will be given an afternoon tour of the chelsea art galleries while in new york for the launch of the new tradhome magazine. it's been awhile since i was in the big apple and i could not be more excited about this trip!! today's post is inspired by my love of the unusual. since i was a kid i have had the love for things that are just a little or a lot "off" the normal beaten path. at first glance boody's work almost seems normal. but take a second look and you'll see a very different world. yesterday was the beginning of west week, and amanda and i went to listen to trina turk discuss her fabric collaboration with creative director susan north with schumacher. it was such an inspiring moment for us because we love both companies and enjoy hearing how the teaming process worked. there was a coupon on our chair to trina's store, which i was totally excited about. it 'forced' me to look online this morning at her latest and greatest collections so i can get an idea of what to run toward when i go to fashion island next. here are some of my eye catching favorites. oh, and ladies, get excited. she said that next on her to do list was to add shoes to the line. i'm giddy...jolene.

i don't think i'm alone when i say it's hard to really stick to one design style. when i think about the house i will raise my kinds in, sometimes i think of a spanish style home with turquoise trim. other times i think of a modern ranch style home with many pieces of iconic furniture. i am constantly adding a new style to my mood board dropbox. because i'm always open minded as a designer (you have to be), i'm constantly perusing european websites to see the latest and greatest. i typically have better luck when hotel hunting for these styles. here in denmark is a great-looking hotel called stay. i love that name. i am such a name whore. i love really catchy cliche names. this is just perfect. doesn't this make you want to go to travelocity right now to ring in a deal? husband, are you listening? jolene.

happy monday domicile readers! we have blogged about molly before. and i know you all know her. well know of her anyway. she has great taste and is now entering the blogging world herself. you can find her here. after perusing through her blog this weekend, i came across a very frank lloyd wright inspired home that she has recently completed in larchmont. loving the woodworking details. my favorite room is that dining room. i'm starting to become more fond of red these last couple of weeks. in fact, i have a fashion file on my desktop, and after reviewing it this weekend it confirmed my new red obsession. i'll start by wearing it, and maybe i'll warm up to the idea of putting it in a client's home. we shall see. jolene.

two things that keep coming up in the house of domicile recently are color blocking and south africa. why color blocking? because color blocking is so in like flynn right now. we love it. and why south africa? i'm actually not sure why...but it's definitely one of those must see destination. i decided to bring the two together into this one post. meet bo-kaap south africa. just outside cape town, the whole city is one big example of color blocking. so beautiful! did kate spade go to bo-kaap over a weekend and paint all these houses herself to match her spring line?? xo amanda

i first discovered urban electric co. in 2004. they were fairly new at the time and i remember feeling like seeing their catalog of offerings was like breath of fresh air. although there are a lot of really great lighting companies out there, it's sometimes hard to find the "perfect" fixture for a project. urban makes this task easy! they also have always had the most amazing customer service which makes their fixtures even more attractive. more good things: they have limitless customization, a fantastic quick ship program, great pricing and all the fixtures are made here in the USA. amanda and i went to a play in los angeles last night, and on my way home i heard of a tsunami warning on the radio for newport beach, ca. this is only 10 or less miles from my home, so i instantly perked up. so far, we are fine and very far away from the ocean so not to worry. by now everyone knows about the devastation in japan and to be honest, i am completely sick to my stomach thinking about the loss of homes and lives. it is a very sad time right now for that country and our thoughts and prayers go out to them. may everyone be safe this weekend. and hug your loved ones! jolene.

did you know there is a gap magazine? online edition. well, it's so new that there weren't a lot of images to snag, but these are my favorite from the hand i was dealt. i am loving that they are finding trends and then shopping those trends in their own store. ya know, i would call it a blog, but hey, they can call it a magazine because i guess it's one in the same really...

here's a cute story about the subject at large. so i used to work for gensler. in fact, that's why i moved my life out here. no regrets. great company. so the story goes...art gensler (owner and founder) was building a sandcastle on the beach in san fran. someone came up to him asking if he was an architect (apparently his sandcastle reflected that talent), and since he is, he replied yes. long story short. that 'someone' was the owner of the gap. he was looking for an architect to help with his first store and that is how he found the art gensler. to this day they still have a strong architect and client relationship, and that is how both companies got started. did you know that? now you do! jolene.

last tuesday night the folks at almont yard hosted a party honoring the new online version of traditional home magazine Tradhome.com. jolene and I were there to celebrate along with friends. midway though our evening we were lucky enough to steal a quick moment with lonny editor in chief michelle adams. Shewww...she is one busy lady! actually...we interrupted a conversation she was having with lulu powers to meet her. we met lulu (celebrity chef and sought after caterer) just briefly and i very much look forward to meeting her again at some point. she is totally fab!! her website and book are delicious! xo amanda
